You are not obligated to use these character profiles as-is. All characters from Pre-Rift era exist in unlimited parallel dimensions. So you, can take just the name or a few characteristics or back story and do what you want with them. The less you change about the characters, the closer of a dimension your characters live to mine, and that's fine too.
The Rift (see worldbuilding) only happens in one very specific universe, but versions of the characters can also populate worlds where The Rift never happens. Right now, Ice, Queen of Summer is the only story I have set in the Rifted age, and Beware the False Moon is the only story I have with characters set in the Mended age, and these characters are more static because The Rift only happens in one universe.
Characters like Nakia and Aura, who exist in the Pre-Rift, Rifted, and Mended eras could have millions of versions of themselves in the Pre-Rift era, but their characterization once they make it to the Rifted and Mended eras would be more static.
So, if you want your story to fit into the canon I'm creating, you'll want to stick as close as possible to the characterizations here. That said, you're under no obligation to write stories or create art that fits into the canon. Do what you want. :)
